The mission was founded in 1991 by Reverend Tom Miller and his wife, Letitia. They originally served the community as a feeding program.
When they retired in 2004, Dr. Herbert Opalek was called to both lead and expand the missions outreach. Under his direction the mission established the New Life Transformation Program for both men and women as well as an Outreach Meals Program.
Following Dr. Opalek's untimely death in April of 2011, Dr. Bruce Metcalf was called to continue pursuing Dr. Opalek's vision for the mission.
Merced County Rescue Mission is now recognized as a community benefit organization that serves those in need throughout Merced County.
